Branching, Switching & Milestones
Manage diverging lines of development and tag milestones in MiniGit.
1. List Branches (minigit branch)
Lists all branches, marking the currently checked-out branch with an asterisk (*):
bash
minigit branch
2. Create a Branch (minigit branch <name>)
Creates a new branch reference pointing to the current HEAD:
bash
minigit branch feature/payments
3. Switch Branches (minigit switch)
Safely updates the working directory and index to the target branch:
bash
# Switch to existing branch
minigit switch feature/payments
# Create and switch in a single step (-c)
minigit switch -c hotfix/patch-1
4. Delete a Branch (minigit branch -d)
Safely deletes a branch reference:
bash
minigit branch -d feature/payments
5. Historic Checkout & Detached HEAD (minigit checkout)
Navigates to a specific historical commit:
bash
minigit checkout 1a0b3c58342dc2145b20756e4c7ba987e9e6a0d0d4638708c3525287f3942007
To exit detached HEAD, switch back to a named branch:
bash
minigit switch main
6. Milestones & Releases (minigit tag)
Create lightweight or annotated tags to mark releases:
bash
# List tags
minigit tag
# Lightweight tag
minigit tag v1.0.0
# Annotated tag with message and tagger identity
minigit tag -a v1.1.0 -m "Release v1.1.0"
# Delete tag
minigit tag -d v1.0.0
